What it's like to live here.

Alto do Pina is the slice of east Lisbon that sits between Olaias and Areeiro — a residential parish that most people pass through without naming. That's part of why it works for students: it's close enough to Alameda that you can walk to IST in ten minutes, but priced and paced as a real neighbourhood rather than a campus zone.

The transit is unusually good for somewhere this calm. Olaias on the red line is in the parish itself — direct to Alameda in one stop, to São Sebastião in three, to the airport in ten minutes — and Roma-Areeiro train station is a ten-minute walk for Sintra-line and Cascais-line trains. ISCTE is a single metro change away (red to yellow at Saldanha), about ten minutes door-to-door.

The streets are 1960s-and-later — wider sidewalks, lower rises, fewer tourists. Pingo Doce on Avenida Almirante Reis covers the basics; there's a Lidl up by Olaias and the Mercado de Arroios is a fifteen-minute walk. For coffee and a quiet morning, Pão Pão Queijo Queijo and the cafés around Praça Pasteleiro do Bairro keep neighbourhood hours. Bettina & Niccolò Corallo — the chocolate-bean-to-bar place — is a short walk into Arroios when you want something specific.

Two practical things to know. The parish has a couple of steep streets between the lower (Almirante Reis) edge and the upper (Bela Vista) edge — pick your flat with the hill in mind if that matters. And Bela Vista park, which technically borders the parish, is one of the largest green spaces in central Lisbon and is most students' default running route.

Rents sit slightly below the Alameda core — figure €400 to €600 per room. The flats nearest Olaias metro and Roma-Areeiro train run at the top of that range.

Best fit: IST and ISCTE students who want a quieter base than Arroios proper, and anyone with a regular commute who values having both metro and suburban-rail in the same five-minute walk.
