Where the campus is, and why west-side Lisbon makes sense
FCT NOVA's Caparica campus is on the south side of the Tagus, in Almada, across the 25 de Abril bridge. Two realistic ways in: the bus 153 from Praça do Comércio (30–40 min direct over the bridge) or a train to Pragal from Roma-Areeiro or Sete Rios, then a campus shuttle (about 35 min total). Either way, the practical rule is: live on the western side of central Lisbon. Eastern parishes — Anjos, Arroios, Penha — add 20 minutes you don't need every morning.
This is the parish set FCT students actually use: Alcântara, Lapa, Santa Isabel, Ajuda. From any of them you're a short bus or tram from the Cais do Sodré / Praça do Comércio bus stops that feed the bridge, or directly onto the Pragal-bound train.

Typical price band for FCT NOVA students
FCT pulls a high share of Erasmus+ science and engineering students, often on EU exchange grants of €350–€500/month. Realistic budget for a private room with everything included: €420–€650. The western parishes have a wide spread — Ajuda is genuinely affordable (older buildings, residential streets, less tourist pressure), while Lapa and Santa Isabel sit higher. Alcântara is the sweet spot: well-connected, mixed building stock, real neighbourhood feel.
If you're on a longer master's or PhD stay, studios in Alcântara or Ajuda run €700–€950. We rarely see FCT students take serviced one-beds — the budget profile and the commute don't reward it.
FAQ
Do I need a Portuguese NIF before signing a lease at Place to Stay?
No — we hold rooms while you obtain your NIF after arrival. Many students sign first and get their NIF in their first two weeks at a Finanças office. The Lapa and Estrela Finanças locations are walkable from most of our western flats.
What's included in the rent?
Furnished room, all bills (water, electricity, gas, internet), weekly common-area cleaning, bedding, kitchen kit, 24/7 maintenance. The price you see is the price you pay every month.
Can my parents pay rent from abroad?
Yes — SEPA transfers from any EU country, international wires from elsewhere. Most parents set up a recurring transfer for the duration of the lease. Invoices come in your name.
Can I get a residencia / proof-of-address letter for immigration?
Yes. We issue an official declaração de morada within 48 hours of move-in. It's accepted by AIMA (the immigration authority that replaced SEF in 2023) and by FCT NOVA's international office for the gabinete de mobilidade procedures.
Is the deposit refundable?
Yes, fully, minus documented damage. Joint walkthrough at check-out, refund within 30 days. Standard wear isn't deducted — we've been doing this since 2019 and we're not in the deposit-shaving business.
Will I get help registering with AIMA / immigration?
We'll point you to the right AIMA branch, give you the documents you need from us, and explain the residency-registration steps for EU citizens (90-day rule) or non-EU students (90-day in-country window after entry). We don't file the paperwork for you, but you won't be guessing.
