Where the campus is, and the choice every NOVA SBE student makes

NOVA SBE's Carcavelos campus sits on the Atlantic coast, 18 km west of central Lisbon. There's no metro — you take the Cascais train line from Cais do Sodré, and Carcavelos station is a 10-minute walk from the building. The full door-to-door commute from central Lisbon is 35–55 minutes depending on where you live.

That's the trade-off every NOVA SBE student weighs. Many MBAs and exchange students take a flat in Cascais or Estoril for a 10-minute commute and a quieter life. Others — usually those who want bairro nightlife, weekend culture, and a city you can walk through after dark — pick a Lisbon parish on the western side and accept the train ride. Place to Stay covers the second group. If you want to be in Lisbon proper but still on a sensible commute to Carcavelos, our western-Tagus flats are the right answer.

Commute from Place to Stay parishes

Parish Mode Time
Alcântara Train (Cascais line) 35 min
Lapa Walk + train 40 min
Ajuda Bus + train 40 min
Santa Isabel Tram + train 45 min
São Domingos de Benfica Metro + train 50 min
Campolide Bus + train 45 min

Alcântara is the clear winner: it has its own Cascais-line station (Alcântara-Mar), so you skip the trip into Cais do Sodré entirely.

Typical price band for NOVA SBE students

NOVA SBE pulls a more international, higher-budget cohort than most Lisbon faculties — MBAs, master's in finance, exchange students from top European business schools. The realistic band is €600–€1,100 for a private room or compact studio, with most landing around €750. Serviced one-beds in Lapa or Alcântara push €1,200–€1,600 for senior MBAs or visiting faculty.

Why the higher band: NOVA SBE students prioritise location quality and shorter commutes, and the western parishes (Lapa, Alcântara, Santa Isabel) carry the city's nicer late-19th-century building stock. You're paying for a working lift, decent insulation, and a 5-minute walk to a tram.

FAQ

Do I need a Portuguese NIF before signing a lease at Place to Stay?

No — we hold rooms while you obtain your NIF after arrival. Many NOVA SBE students sign first and get their NIF in their first two weeks, sometimes via a fiscal representative arranged before they fly in. We can recommend a tax representative if you'd rather have it sorted before landing.

Can my parents pay rent from abroad?

Yes — SEPA from EU countries, international wires from outside the EU, and we accept payments in your parents' name as long as the lease is in yours. We'll issue invoices that work for tax purposes back home if your parents need them.

What's included in the rent?

Furnished room, all utilities (water, electricity, gas, fibre internet), weekly cleaning of common areas, linens, kitchen equipment, and 24/7 maintenance. We don't charge separately for "fair use" — heating in winter is included, no surcharges.

Can I get a residencia / proof-of-address letter for immigration?

Yes. We issue an official declaração de morada within 48 hours of move-in, accepted by AIMA for residency registration and by NOVA SBE's international office for enrolment.

How long is the minimum stay?

For NOVA SBE students we typically align to your programme: a full semester (5 months), an academic year (10 months), or the length of the MBA. We avoid short-stay/tourist contracts in our student stock — landlords and neighbours both prefer settled tenants, and so do we.

Is the deposit refundable?

Yes, fully, minus documented damage. Refund hits your account within 30 days of check-out. We do the walkthrough together so there are no surprises.

Are bills included?

Yes — every figure we quote is the all-in monthly cost. No separate utilities invoice, no end-of-month "consumption settlement".
