Where the campus is, and what it means for where to live
FCSH NOVA's main building is on Avenida de Berna, between Praça de Espanha and Saldanha — the heart of Avenidas Novas. It sits inside a triangle of metro stations: Praça de Espanha (blue) and São Sebastião (blue + red) to the west, Saldanha (yellow + red) to the north-east. That gives you four metro lines within 10 minutes, which means almost every central parish is reachable.
The smart move for FCSH students isn't to live on top of campus (Avenida de Berna itself is mostly office stock and embassies) but to land in a residential parish one or two metro stops away. São Sebastião da Pedreira is the natural choice — quiet streets, walkable to Berna, surrounded by cafés and a Saturday market. Areeiro and São Domingos de Benfica are the runners-up.

Typical price band for FCSH students
FCSH attracts humanities, languages, history, philosophy, and social science cohorts — often Erasmus, often on tighter grants than business or engineering. Realistic budget: €400–€600 for a private room with bills included. Most of our FCSH tenants sit around €475–€525.
The good news is São Sebastião da Pedreira and Areeiro both have a healthy stock of older flats with shared kitchens — the classic Erasmus setup. São Domingos de Benfica runs slightly cheaper on average and the metro ride is direct. If you want a studio, Avenidas Novas pushes €750–€950, which most FCSH students skip in favour of a shared flat with character.
FAQ
Do I need a Portuguese NIF before signing a lease at Place to Stay?
No — we hold rooms while you obtain your NIF after arrival. Many students sign first and get their NIF in their first two weeks at the Finanças office in Saldanha or Avenidas Novas, both walkable from most FCSH-adjacent flats.
What's included in the rent?
Furnished room, all bills (water, electricity, gas, internet), weekly common-area cleaning, bedding, kitchen kit, 24/7 maintenance. Heating in winter is included — no extra charges when the temperature drops.
Can my parents pay rent from abroad?
Yes — SEPA transfers from EU, international wires from outside. Invoices in your name, paid by anyone with a bank account. Standing orders are common and we'll set them up with you on day one.
Can I get a residencia / proof-of-address letter for immigration?
Yes. We issue an official declaração de morada within 48 hours of move-in, accepted by AIMA and by FCSH's international office. If you're a non-EU student, this is one of the documents you'll need for your residency permit appointment.
How long is the minimum stay?
We align contracts to academic semesters: Sep–Jan or Feb–Jul. Full year is also fine. We don't do month-to-month for student stock — landlords and neighbours both prefer settled tenants.
Is the deposit refundable?
Yes, fully, minus documented damage. Joint walkthrough at check-out, refund within 30 days to the account you specify. Normal wear (a scuff on the wall, a worn rug) doesn't come out of the deposit.
