Where the campus is, and what it means for housing
Cidade Universitária is the largest university campus in Portugal — the Reitoria of Universidade de Lisboa plus the faculties of Letras, Direito, Farmácia, Psicologia, Belas-Artes, Ciências, and a dozen others, spread across green grounds north of Avenidas Novas. The metro station of the same name (yellow line) drops you at the heart of campus. Most of the buildings are within a 10-minute walk of each other.
Because the campus is so large and the student body so diverse, there's no single "right" parish. The pattern that emerges is yellow-line first: São Sebastião da Pedreira (one or two stops south), Saldanha (already on the line), Areeiro (a short transfer). What you're optimising for is a metro ride short enough to do twice a day, and a parish residential enough that you can actually study at home.

Typical price band for ULisboa students
Cidade Universitária pulls the widest student spread in the country — Portuguese students from across the country, international degree-seekers, Erasmus exchanges, master's, PhDs. Realistic budget: €400–€700 for a private room with bills included.
Portuguese students on family budgets often land at the lower end (€400–€500), usually in shared flats with three or four rooms. Erasmus and international students typically sit around €500–€650. Master's and PhD students who want their own space push toward studios in the €750–€1,000 range. We have stock across the whole band — what matters is being honest about which you actually need.
FAQ
Do I need a Portuguese NIF before signing a lease at Place to Stay?
No — we hold rooms while you obtain your NIF after arrival. Many students sign first and get their NIF in their first two weeks at the Saldanha or Avenidas Novas Finanças office. Portuguese students bringing a NIF from another district can use it directly; international students get one issued on first appointment.
What's included in the rent?
Furnished room, all bills (water, electricity, gas, internet), weekly cleaning of common areas, bedding, kitchen kit, 24/7 maintenance. No end-of-month "consumption settlement" — the price is fixed.
Can my parents pay rent from abroad?
Yes — SEPA from any EU country, international wires from elsewhere. We accept payment from anyone as long as the lease and invoice are in your name. Standing orders are common.
Can I get a residencia / proof-of-address letter for immigration?
Yes. We issue an official declaração de morada within 48 hours of move-in, accepted by AIMA for residency registration and by ULisboa's gabinete de relações internacionais.
How long is the minimum stay?
We align contracts to the ULisboa calendar: a full semester or full academic year. For PhDs and longer programmes, multi-year contracts are straightforward. We don't do tourist-style short stays in our student stock.
Is the deposit refundable?
Yes, fully, minus documented damage. Joint walkthrough at check-out, refund within 30 days. Normal wear isn't deducted — we've been doing this since 2019 and the policy hasn't changed.
Are pets allowed?
Sometimes — it depends on the specific flat and the landlord. About a third of our stock is pet-friendly. Tell us before we start the search and we'll filter accordingly.
